Clive Shares His Wisdom
Local Toowoomba business icon and philanthropist Mr Clive Berghofer visited DISCO in late February to speak to young people about his achievements and provide some advice on the most important qualities that he believes are critical to be successful as a worker or business owner.
"Without doubt some of the most important qualities are being prepared to work hard and always be honest. Any worker that does that is likely to move forward positively in a workplace".
Mr Berghofer said.
Mr Berghofer noted that with the continuing impact of computers and technology in workplaces it was more difficult to identify hard work and initiative because much of what takes place now is on the Internet or is computer based and not always as visible.
The young people asked Mr Berghofer why he had chosen the specific organisations to donate to over the years.
Me Berghofer responded by saying the large part of the money he had given away was targeted to support the Toowoomba community and he acknowledged that without the support of Toowoomba people he would never have accumulated the wealth he had. In addition he noted that significant donations like the one to the Medical Research Institute in Brisbane was made to benefit all people and he had a particular interest in seeing cancer research supported as it impacted on some many lives young and old.
Mr Berghofer's final quote was noted by everyone present;
"Some people can handle money but they can't make it and some people can make money but they can't handle it".
Mr Berghofer added that money carefully earned and more carefully spent will always grow and mean that you will have more choices in older life when you are less capable of earning it.
